Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has welcomed the news that the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Food and Environment, Richard Lochhead, has agreed not to lay the Small Isles Management Order of the MPA until further discussions are held with a view to finding agreement on the laying of a revised Order in the coming weeks.
This follows a meeting in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday 4th of February, between Mr Thompson, The Cabinet Secretary, and members of Mallaig & North West Fishermen's Association (MNWFA), including Chief Executive, Tom Bryan-Brown, Angus Mclean, and Willie John Mclean.
Mr Thompson said, “I welcome the news following my meeting with the Cabinet Secretary, Richard Lochhead, his officials, and members of MNWFA, that the laying of the Management Order of the Small Isles MPA will not be going ahead.
“The economy of the west coast is heavily dependent on a viable fishing industry and so, I support the modest changes proposed by MNWFA, which will mitigate the economic impact of the MPA fishing restrictions.
“It is heartening that the Government has listened to the concerns of the fishermen and I look forward to further constructive discussions in the coming weeks before a revised Order will be laid”.
