Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, has today welcomed the news today that the Isle of Muck has been awarded a grant of £978,840 from the Big Lottery Fund Growing Community Assets Programme.
Isle of Muck Community Enterprise Ltd has been given the award which will mean that residents will soon have a reliable and affordable supply of electricity on tap. The current supply comes from a diesel generator, which only operates for 10 hours a day. Soon the islanders will have the benefits of 24 hour electricity for the first time.
As one of only a few islands that are not connected to the National Grid, this award will allow the islanders to have a continuous supply of electricity that is clean, sustainable and renewable.
Commenting on the awards, Mr Thompson said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Isle of Muck has been awarded this grant to help the islanders generate their own electricity. Muck is one of only a few islands that is not connected to the National Electricity Supply and I hope that this will help them to have the continuous supply of electricity that we on the mainland take for granted.
“I would hope that this will also lead to further investment in the Island, which in turn would lead to more jobs on the Island further securing the future of the people and families that live there.”
