Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch MSP Dave Thompson has welcomed the news that the Prisoners Advice Network Scotland is to receive a grant of £889,317 from the BIG Lottery funds ‘Investing in Communities’ programme.
The project is run by the housing charity Shelter, who have been working with the Inverness, Badenoch and Strathspey Citizens Advice Bureau, provides specialist housing advice and support for ex-offenders and their families in Inverness, Dundee, Aberdeen and Perth.
The aim of the project is to break the link between re-offending rates and a lack of stable accommodation.
Shelter notes that it can be very challenging for offenders to secure housing in a competitive market on release, and that this leads to a high level of homelessness.
Commenting on this, Dave Thompson said: “I’d like to congratulate Miss Helen Richardson on securing this grant for Shelter. The Prisoners Advice Network project can make a huge difference to the lives of offenders families, and offenders on release.
There are also wider benefits as the project aims to reduce levels of re-offending. Studies suggest that stable housing is crucial to the rehabilitation of prisoners, and any moves to reduce re-offending rates make our communities safer.
Shelter does an excellent job in tackling homelessness in our communities, and it is great to see them being recognised and supported for their valuable work.”
