The Lib Dems' credibility is languishing at an all-time low as a result of their policies and commitment to backing up the Tories in Westminster, not the various personal scandals surrounding the party, a SNP MSP has said today.
With their Party Conference in Brighton starting today, Lib Dem president Tim Farron who likened the party to a “a bit like cockroaches after a nuclear war” but warned supporters that the party is in a "critical state" and its survival is not guaranteed.
SNP MSP Dave Thompson has outlined how it is their pact with the Tories and betrayal of principles such as supporting the Bedroom Tax which is the reason for their relevance in Scottish politics becoming negligible.
Mr Thompson said: “No wonder the Lib Dems' own president is making fearful noises about the future existence of his party.
“The recent scandals only add insult to injury but the Lib Dems real problem is their refusal to acknowledge that they consigned their party to the history books in Scotland in May 2010 when they made a pact with the Tories.
“The Lib Dems are guilty of allowing the harsh, punitive cuts which the Westminster system is inflicting on working families and vulnerable people – including the iniquitous Bedroom Tax - and illustrates exactly why Scotland needs an independent Parliament, so that we can decide welfare policies in and for Scotland.
"So while senior Lib Dems are busy telling delegates to tell their grassroots members how they can maintain their own identity while propping up the Tories, it’s unsurprising that their support in Scotland has gone beyond critical. The whole party needs to reflect seriously on how they have ended up on the wrong side of the argument in Scotland."
