An SNP MSP has welcomed the news that the average speed cameras on the A9 are already delivering results – and has urged Danny Alexander to finally accept the evidence that the cameras will make the road safer.
Transport Scotland has confirmed today that the average speed cameras have already succeeded in changing driver behaviour – despite not even being switched on yet.
Figures show that while one in three drivers had been exceeding the speed limit on the road between Perth and Pitlochry – the number has now fallen to one in ten since the installation of the cameras.
A study has also been conducted of other average speed camera sites across the UK – which found an average 61 per cent reduction in fatal and serious accidents.
Danny Alexander has faced criticism recently for his opposition to the average speed cameras – and faced ridicule for his claim last week that people being allowed to speed on the A9 would do more for tourism in the Highlands than a cut in Air Passenger Duty.
Commenting, SNP MSP Dave Thompson said: “The news that the average speed cameras on the A9 are already delivering results and making the road safer – despite not even being switched on yet – is very welcome indeed.
“That the number of motorists speeding has fallen from one in three to one in ten confirms what we already knew – that speed cameras work and make our roads safer for everyone who uses them.
“With this new evidence, even the most ardent critics of speed cameras on the A9 will have to accept that they get results – Danny Alexander’s dangerous message on road safety has been shown to be totally out of line.
“Danny Alexander must now stop his political posturing on this issue in a desperate attempt to save his seat next year. He should accept the evidence – and back the Scottish Government’s plans to improve safety on the A9.
