Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has recently amended a Motion in the Parliament that seeks to celebrate the Christian missionary, Mary Slessor, on International Women's Day in 2015.
Commenting on this, Mr Thompson said, "The original Motion submitted, rightly highlights that the centenary of the death of Mary Slessor should be celebrated.
Mary left the slums of Dundee and went on to save hundreds of lives, promoting women's rights in Calabar, Nigeria.
However, Mary Slessor was not just a shining light for women, she was a leading Christian, who defined herself as such, and therefore she should be recognised and remembered as such.
The original motion made no mention of her faith. This was so important to her life and life's work it is crucial it is maintained in references to her, in case this particular aspect of our history is forgotten.
In attempting to convey Mary Slessor in the most accurate manner, I hope the Parliament will agree with my proposed adjustments to the Motion".
Notes:
Dave's proposed amendments and original motion:
As an amendment to motion S4M-12191 in the name of Jenny Marra (Celebrating Mary Slessor on International Women's Day 2015), after "Nigeria" insert "; believes that she was a Christian who followed the convictions of her faith and was a shining light for women and Christians alike".
