Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has congratulated West Highland College UHI on having recently been awarded the Buttle UK Quality Mark in respect of the arrangements the college has in place to give particular care and support to young people from a care background so they can achieve in further and higher education.
Buttle UK aim to provide practical solutions that give children a fighting chance in life. They look at more strategic ways to improve the life chances of those they help, by influencing opinion formers, policy makers and practitioners. They do this through research projects, as well as initiatives like the Quality Mark for Care Leavers in Further and Higher Education.
Commenting on this, Mr Thompson said,
“I would like to congratulate West Highland College UHI on their continued commitment to their students, regardless of background.
Identifying and supporting students was identified by Buttle UK as an example of best practice, therefore my congratulations also extend to those staff who ensure, via their links with other community organisations, that all students have a great college experience”.
Dave went on,
“Folk from care back grounds should have the same chances of educational attainment as those from more traditional background, so I applaud the work of West Highland College UHI in making this happen”.
