Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has written to the John Muir Trust (JMT) seeking reassurance from them that they will be collaborating with other Estates in order to plan and deliver a joint Deer Management Plan for Knoydart.
This follows a number of constituent queries and concerns about the unwillingness of the JMT to collaborate with other Estates to bring about an effective Deer Management Plan for Knoydart, and follows the recent differences between gamekeepers and the charity over the treatment of Deer on the remote Highland Estate.
Mr Thompson said, "I have written to the John Muir Trust (JMT) seeking reassurance from them that they are committed to an effective Voluntary Deer Management Plan for Knoydart and that they will play a collaborative role in the process.
"In the interim, I note JMT's statement that they are committed to working with their neighbours to find a practical way forward and that is most pleasing".
Dave went on, "Having already been in touch with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) on the matter and having received numerous emails on the issue, I am heartened that SNH is working on the Deer Management Plan, and in doing so, they are urging the JMT to unite and work together on the process of that plan.
"I am aware that SNH could take further action from a regulatory standpoint if the Deer Management Plan for Knoydart fails. I urge the JMT and others involved to support a voluntary and collaborative approach at Knoydart to create a workable plan for the Estate.
"I look forward to hearing from the JMT in due course".

Dear Stuart,
Collaboration: Knoydart Deer Management
I have been in touch with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) regarding constituent concerns around Knoydart Deer Management. SNH intimated they were in dialogue with you about the recent deer cull and the need to collaborate going forward.
As you might expect we have had a number queries on this and there has been concern about the willingness of the John Muir Trust to collaborate with other Estates, in order to plan and deliver a joint deer management plan to the benefit of all the affected local communities.
I am seeking reassurance that you agree for the Deer Management Plan for Knoydart to be effective the John Muir Trust has a significant communicative and collaborative role to play?
This will not just give any plan the best chance of success, but it will nullify any tensions between interested parties as the process progresses.
I believe if everyone unites and works together a successful deer management plan can be achieved and I hope you do too.
Yours Sincerely,
Dave Thompson MSP
