Highlands & Islands SNP MSP Dave Thompson highlighted during rural affairs question time the efforts of the Scottish Government today (Thursday) on its progress of the electronic sheep identification research pilot, running through the rest of this year.
Dave also highlighted the breakthrough of SNP MEP Alyn Smith in Brussels yesterday who's amendment to create an EID relief fund of £125 million was passed by the European Parliament's Agricultural Committee.
Commenting Dave said: "Given how difficult it is to make progress with both hands tied behind your back, this Scottish Government is doing everything in its power to stand up for Scottish farmers and crofters in Europe.
"The Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs assured me today of the promising progress the EID research pilot is making in helping the industry to recognise both the difficulties and potential solutions needed for this challenging regulation.
"Alyn Smith's amendment for an EID relief fund has also successfully broke through the first hurdle in securing £125 million in relief for our farmers and crofters who were committed to these regulations by the previous Scottish Executive and UK Government.
"Though the EID Relief fund still has further hurdles to cross, it is yet another example of the hard work this SNP Government is doing in Europe to represent the voice of the Scottish farmer and crofter.
Note:
The EID Relief fund amendment will next be considered by the European Parliament's Budget Committee and then voted upon by the full Parliament.
