Highlands and Islands MSP Dave Thompson has demanded that NHS Highland improve its engagement with the local population when making changes to the way services are delivered.

Mr Thompson (SNP) decided to write to NHS Highland chairman Garry Coutts to raise the issue after a recent visit to Skye, where he met Roddy Murray, chairman of Sleat Community Council, and was told about local anger that NHS changes had allegedly been adopted with minimal input from islanders.

Noting that this anger appeared in some cases to be focussed mainly on this perceived lack of public consultation, rather than the change itself, Mr Thompson urged Mr Coutts to do all he could to improve the situation.

In his letter, the SNP politician wrote: "Despite the fact that there is a Skye and Lochalsh reference group and other arrangements supposedly designed to inform and consult the local community, this does not appear to be happening effectively in practice.

"I know that you are very aware of the need to be honest and open with communities when changes are being considered so I am concerned to hear of these problems and would ask that you look into this matter to ensure everything possible is being done to consult and inform local communities.

"I realise that the management of change is never easy but in such a sensitive area it is essential that you take the public with you when considering changes."

Recently concern about health provision on Skye has increased, particularly since proposals to alter GP services and hospital facilities on the island were made public.
