SKYE, Lochaber and Badenoch MSP, Dave Thompson, urges Highlanders who are passionate about tackling climate change to take advantage of the Climate Challenge Fund (CCF).
The government confirmed its commitment to extending CCF’s funding to £10.3 million last week. The CCF, along with a Junior CCF for under 18s, supports community-led action to reduce emissions. Junior CCF aims to award ten per cent of the CCF towards carbon reducing projects that work with young people.
Dave Thompson commented, “It is evident that local organisations in the Highlands are already taking steps to tackle climate change. With more funds available, it will be exciting to see new projects and ideas taking shape.
“The addition of the Junior CCF means young people in the Highlands can also take advantage of the funds available. With their innovative and creative ideas, the next generation can really make a difference on this issue.
There are a number of organisations in the Highlands which have already benefitted from this Government scheme. These include Ross-shire Waste Action Network and Lochaber Environment Group. Both organisations received over £40,000 in funding for 2011/2012. Other groups, such as Mallaig and Morar Community Centre association received over £14,000.
Environment and Climate Change Minister, Stewart Stevenson, announced the scheme last week. He emphasised the importance of grass roots action if Scotland is to move towards a truly low carbon economy.
Applications for CCF close on 2nd December 2011.
