Highlands and Islands SNP MSP, Dave Thompson has welcomed todays announcement that Telephone exchanges in the Highlands and islands are to be upgraded, providing increased access to broadband.
John Swinney, the Finance Secretary, made the announcement today after holding talks with BT aimed at securing increased broadband capacity in remote areas.
Commenting Dave said: "I am very aware of the frustration felt in rural areas where people are unable to obtain a proper broadband service. I have received a number of complaints from my constituents about this and have raised the issue with the government and BT.
"I am delighted that John Swinney has found a way forward that will allow an exchange upgrade programme to take place. This will enable more residents and businesses to benefit from broadband."
The exchanges to be upgraded are expected to be agreed in the coming weeks, following further discussions between the Scottish Government and BT. Exchanges operating at or approaching capacity will be given early consideration.
It follows the completion earlier this year of a separate Scottish Government project to extend affordable broadband services, which 2,100 businesses and households, many in the Highlands and islands, are now benefiting from.
