Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch MSP Dave Thompson has reminded his constituents to prepare for winter by ensuring they have a sensible supply of cold and flu remedies and any regular medication they require.

Mr Thompson also reminded constituents to be aware of changes to GP and pharmacy opening times over the festive period. The MSP gave his reminder following the launch of the Scottish Government’s winter health campaign, when Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon joined Dr George Crooks, medical director of NHS 24, to stress the importance of being prepared for cold weather.

Ms Sturgeon said: “It is important to remember that access to GPs and pharmacists will be limited over Christmas and New Year. Planning ahead can ensure that coughs, colds and minor ailments don’t become a big problem for you and your family this winter.

Mr Thompson added: “Every medicine cabinet should be well stocked with things like painkillers, a cough mixture and antiseptic, as well as any regular medication needed for a particular condition.

“The experience of the last two winters has shown that severe winter can make travel for even medical matters problematic so it is important to make preparations for those conditions that can be treated with over-the-counter or predictable medication.

“Particularly in rural areas, where the nearest doctor or pharmacist can be some distance away, it is important that, where possible, preparations are taken to deal with the type of condition that can be more common at this time of year.

This year, GP surgeries in the NHS Highland area are scheduled to close from Saturday to Tuesday at both Christmas and New Year.

Dr Crooks added: “If you need to visit your GP, try to schedule an appointment before the festive period and submit your repeat prescription request in plenty of time. Remember you can also access out of hours GP services through NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24."
