In response to the breaking reports of a fatal accident killing three people at a level crossing in Halkirk, Highlands & Islands SNP MSPs Rob Gibson and Dave Thompson stated: "Our thoughts are with the families of the dead at this time.

"We will look for an early and detailed assessment of the causes of the fatalities.

"The Rail Safety Inspectorate need to work as speedily as possible to allay fears about these rail crossings in the network, and the Office of Rail Regulation must move forward quickly with its investigation of safety at rail crossings across the country."
