Dave Thompson, SNP MSP Skye, Lochaber, and Badenoch recently visited with representatives of the Boys’ Brigade during an exhibition held at the Scottish Parliament.
“It’s great to see organisations like the Boys’ Brigade take such an interest in our young people and I’m pleased with the excellent work they do.
“Thousands of dedicated volunteers give of their free time to help and care for young people across the country. They not only provide a great service, but are positive role models.
The Boys’ Brigade is a Christian organisation that was founded over 125 years ago in Glasgow by Sir William Alexander Smith. Each week around 20,000 young people, aged 5 to 18, take part in one of its 450 groups throughout Scotland aimed at providing a programme of informal education in a fun way.
The exhibition which ran earlier this month highlighted the continued work of the Boys’ Brigade and the results of a recent impact study; the results of the study specifically highlighted the Boy’s Brigade method, the benefits of membership to young people and their links to curriculum for excellence.
Dave further commented saying: “Volunteer organisations like The Boys’ Brigade are more important than ever in these difficult economic times and the volunteers are a key component to helping the organisation run so smoothly and effectively.
“These role models are so influential in the future success of both the young people and the organisation they serve.
Commenting on the exhibition Scotland Director of The Boys’ Brigade, Bill Stevenson, said:
“It is important to keep highlighting the work of the BB to our politicians. Scotland's Parliamentarians have been a great supporter over the years and we want to keep up the momentum.
“This exhibition is a reminder that The Boys’ Brigade is as relevant today as it was when it was founded. In times of high youth unemployment and when there are continuing signs of young people disengaging from society the need for positive role models and purposeful activities for young people has never been clearer. It is a fitting tribute to our many volunteers who make sure that we can continue to care for young people into our 130th year and beyond.
