Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has today welcomed the support from Sheriff Principal Derek Pyle for a new Justice Centre for the Highlands. The Sherriff said he saw considerable merit in the plan. The proposal for a combined Justice Centre and new Prison has previously been described as “an innovative proposal” worthy of serious consideration by Kenny MacAskill MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Justice. Additionally, the Chief Executive of the Scottish Court Service, Eric McQueen has indicated that a feasibility study for a new Highlands Justice Centre will commence shortly. Furthermore, Brigadier Hugh Munro, Scotland’s Chief Inspector of Prisons has indicated that Dingwall should be seriously considered as a location for a new prison to replace HMP Porterfield .
Commenting on this, Dave said: “I am delighted by the positive comments from Sheriff Principal Pyle, which added to all the other support show that the proposal for a combined Justice Centre in the Highlands is one that enjoys a good level of support.
“Unfortunately I am disappointed in the comments from Regional MSP Rhoda Grant, who has accused me of spin.
“Rather than making accusations, I would welcome her support for a proposal that has the potential to create many new jobs and boost the economy of the area.”
