Following the SCVO Scottish Charity Awards on 14th June, Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has raised a motion in the Scottish Parliament to congratulate Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers on winning the Community Action Award at the ceremony held at the Old Fruit Market in Glasgow.
Commenting on the award, Mr Thompson said: “I am absolutely delighted that Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers have been given this award for the fantastic work that they do to support young carers in the Skye and Lochalsh area. Marjory Jagger and her team are to be applauded for the dedication and hard work that they put in on a daily basis to make sure that young carers in the area are not disadvantaged in any way.
“It is a well deserved award. I was happy to nominate them for an award, as they are a very dedicated team who work exceptionally hard to help the young folk of the area.
“This award is made even more significant given that this week is Carers Week. Support for all carers is essential, and more so for our young carers, who are so often overlooked because they quietly get on with their job of caring. Most young carers have to juggle their personal lives along with their education, and a lot of young folk find that their education suffers because of their caring duties. Their dedication is heartwarming and inspirational, given that all too often, young folk are viewed in a different light.
“I have raised this motion in the Parliament to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of young carers in the Skye and Lochalsh area and to congratulate Marjory and her team on their awards. I most definitely look forward to working with them in the future.

Motion to the Scottish Parliament:
S4M-03383 : Congratulations to Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers
That the Parliament offers its warmest congratulations to Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers on winning the Community Action Award at the recent SCVO Scottish Charity Awards, which were held at the Old FruitMarket in Glasgow; acknowledges what it sees as the hard work and dedication shown by young carers in the Skye and Lochalsh area; understands that these young people often care for relatives and can struggle to balance home life and education; believes that. without Marjory Jagger and her team, many young carers in the area would not receive the support that they so richly deserve; wishes Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers the very best for the upcoming year, and looks forward to hearing of their successes in the future.
This year's Carers Week runs between 18 and 24 June. Groups throughout Scotland will be holding events and activities to raise awareness, providing information, advice and support and to reach hidden carers. More details about events can be found at www.carerweek.org.
In the run up to this years Carers Week, the partnership of eight charities (including Carers Scotland) set out to explore through an online survey, the impact of caring on carers health and well-being. In addition, the charities wanted to explore the extent to which carers were able to access services and if the cuts to social care were having an effect.
The report In Sickness and in Health outlines the findings of the survey of nearly 3,400 carers and their experiences. It concludes with recommendations from the eight charity partners and a call to action for the four governments of the UK. 83% of carers in the survey stated that caring had a negative impact on their physical health and 87% on their mental health. 39% have put off medical treatment because of caring and more than a third have had to give up employment because of their caring responsibilities.
