Dave Thompson MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has welcomed the news that £60,200 raised through the National Lottery will be awarded via the Heritage Lottery fund to the Cromarty Medieval Burgh Community Archaeology Project.
The Cromarty Medieval Burgh Community Achaeology Project (2014 – 2016) is a community based project that will focus on the history and archaeology of the Royal Burgh of Cromarty from the Burgh’s foundation around 1266 AD to 1880 AD.
In welcoming the news Mr Thompson stated, “This award will enable the project to provide for locals an opportunity for them to engage, investigate and learn more about their heritage and will enhance the understanding of the Medieval Burgh as a whole”.
The project will begin with trial excavations in Reed’s Park and the Old High Street in Cromarty with local school children and up to 30 volunteers taking part and receiving training in basic archaeological techniques. A series of open days will also be held.
Commenting on this Mr Thompson said, “This is a wonderful chance for adults and children alike to learn new skills on excavation, recording and sampling and have some fun at the same time. I am looking forward to hearing more as the project progresses and I wish it every success”.
