Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch has today (Monday 24th March) welcomed the result from the whole-school referendum that was held by Plockton High School
Mr Thompson attended the school on Monday 17th March for a Referendum Debate, speaking in favour of Scottish Independence, while Labour MSP Rhoda Grant gave the case for a “No” vote.
The school then held a whole-school referendum vote and the result was 54% Yes, 45% No, 1% Spoiled. For the children that will be eligible to vote on September 18th, the result was 58% Yes, 40% No and 2% Spoiled.
Commenting on this, Mr Thompson said: “I am obviously delighted at the result of the whole-school referendum vote held by Plockton High School given that the majority of the children that voted, voted Yes to Scottish Independence.
“After all these children are Scotland’s Future and they have the opportunity to take control of the future of their country.
“I was immensely pleased to see that, for those who will be eligible to vote, the Yes vote has an 18% lead on the No vote in Plockton High School. If this is the case in other schools across Scotland then we can look forward to celebrating our Independence in 2 years’ time, something I have looked forward to for all of my adult life.
“It is always a pleasure to interact with school pupils in my constituency and this was an opportunity for me to do this and to promote the benefits of Independence to our young folk.
“I must commend Rhoda Grant MSP for giving me a run for my money as far as the debate is concerned.
“I must also commend the pupils of Plockton High School. Their behaviour was impeccable and their questions were well thought out and showed that they have thought about the Referendum and the opportunities that are available for them in an Independent Scotland. They are certainly a credit to their school and their families.
“I will be attending another Referendum Debate in Kinlochleven High School on Friday 4th April and I am very much looking forward to interacting with the pupils there.”
Mrs Susan Galloway, Rector of Plockton High School added: “The Youth Forum pupils, led by Youth Worker Paul Bassett, did a great job of organising Democracy Week in our school which really engaged all pupils in the current issues in Scottish politics and in the democratic process. On behalf of Plockton High School, I would like to thank Dave Thompson and Rhoda Grant for the time they spent in the school both addressing pupils at the Assembly and for the time they took to consider local concerns and to have informal discussion with S6 students in the Library.”
